DBVISIT from Oracle to Postgres

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

As I regularly work on Oracle and PostgreSQL, I decided to test the replication from Oracle to PostgreSQL using the Dbvisit Replicate tool. Dbivisit Replicate does not use Oracle logminer ot triggers but its own mining processes to get the changes when they are written to the redo logs. When a change appears in the redo log, an external file called PLOG is generated and transferred to the target. The architecture is quite easy to…

Grid Infrastructure Installation on SLES 12 SP1

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | 2 Comments

This week I needed to install Oracle Grid Infrastructure 12c release 1 in a SLES 12 SP1 environment. Everything worked fine until I ran the root.sh at the end of the installation. Here’s a quick description of the problem and the workaround. The root.sh script ran into error and the installation was completely unsuccessfull: oracle:/u00/app/grid/12.1.0.2 # /u00/app/grid/12.1.0.2/root.sh Performing root user operation.   The following environment variables are set as:     ORACLE_OWNER= grid     ORACLE_HOME=  /u00/app/grid/12.1.0.2…

Oracle 12.2 tables, indexes new features

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

The Oracle 12.2.0.1 version has some interesting new features  concerning tables or indexes. The first new feature is about the online table move. In 12.2 version Oracle offers now the possibility to move non-partitioned tables without blocking any DML operations. To realise this operation, we must use the ONLINE keyword and/or the UPDATE_INDEXES clause. If you remember, in the previous Oracle version, we encountered the classical ORA-01502 error. If you remember in version 12.1, we have…

Postgres Barman and DMK

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

As PostgreSQL is more and more present in our client’s infrastructure, I wanted to describe you the barman installation and configuration. Barman is the backup and recovery tool for PostgreSQL, I configured it using DMK out tool for infrastructure administrators on Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. I used two virtual severs running under RedHat Enterprise Libux 7.1, one for PostgreSQL database server (pg1) ands the second for barman (pg2). At first I install PostgreSQL 9.6 on…

Oracle 12.2 and Transparent Data Encryption

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

Since the new Oracle 12.2.0 version is released, I decided to test the Transparent Data Encryption as new features are available. The following tests have been made in a multitenant environment, DB1 and two pluggable databases DB1PDB1 and DB1PDB2. The first step consists in creating a software keystore. A software keystore is a container that stores the Transparent Data Encryption key. We define its location in the sqlnet.ora file if we need to use it…

Upgrade to Enterprise Manager 13.2

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | 2 Comments

I will describe how to upgrade Enterprise Manager 13.1.0.0 to the new 13.2.0.0 version. At the beginning we have to ensure that we applied the latest PSU on the repository database. It is mandatory to apply the following patch before upgrading to Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 13.2.0.0: DATABASE PATCH SET UPDATE 12.1.0.2.160419 To install the patch you have to check the following point: – you have to use Oracle Interim Patch Installer version 12.2.0.1.8 Once…

UKOUG 2016 DAY 3

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

Today at UKOUG 2016, the Cloud has won against the sun :=) The first sesssion I attended this morning was animated by Kamil Stawiarski from ORA 600 company: Securing the database againt Unauthorized attacks, but the real title was Oracle Hacking Session. The session was amazing, as usual with Kamil, no slides , only technical demos :=)) He first showed us that after creating a standard user in an Oracle database with the classical privileges…

UKOUG 2016 Day 2

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

Today I assisted at a first session about one of my favorite tool: Upgrade to EM 13c now. The session was presented by Phil Gric from Red Stack Tech. At the begining he described us the most common mistakes while implementing Enterprise Manager: – EM 13c is an enterprise application – It is a critical part of your infrastructure – it is designed to help you – EM 13c is not a glorified db console…

UKOUG Super Sunday

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

Today at the UKOUG Super Sunday in Birmingham, I had the opportunity to assist at interesting conferences. The first presentation was about Oracle RAC internals and its new features in version 12.2.0.1 on Oracle Cloud. The main new features concern the cache fusion, the undo header hash table, the leaf nodes, and the hang manager. In 12c release 2 in a RAC environment, the cache fusion automatically chooses an optimal path; the cache fusion collects…
