In my previous article, I announced the first fix for SQL Server 2012.
One week later, the first cumulative update is available on the Microsoft website.
What is a cumulative update?
Just a reminder: a cumulative update, also known as CU, is an addition of several hotfixes.
What is in this first CU for SQL Server 2012?
This CU has 54 hotfixes:
- 33 for the engine
- 14 for SSAS
- 3 for SSRS
- 3 for DQS
- 1 for MDS
I will not give you the whole list but all detailed dixes that are included in CU1 are in the section “MORE INFORMATION” on the website.
I noticed that there are a lot of hotfixes for SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) and the first Fix is included in this CU.
What is the new build of SQL Server 2012 in this update?
If you update your SQL Server 2012, you will have a new build version: 11.00.2316
I take this opportunity to introduce a quick summary of Microsoft SQL Server 2012 builds since the beginning:
Date | SQL server 2012 version | Build |
November 2010 | Community Technology Preview 1 (CTP1) | 11.00.1103 |
July 2011 | Community Technology Preview 3 (CTP3) | 11.00.1440 |
November 2011 | Release Candidate 0 (RC0) | 11.00.1750 |
December 2011 | Release Candidate 1 (RC1) | 11.00.1913 |
March 2012 | RTM | 11.00.2100 |
April 2012 | Cumulative Update (CU1) | 11.00.2316 |
In comparison, the first CU for 2008R2 was released 1 month after the RTM with more than 70 hotfixes and for 2008 it was 2 month after the RTM with almost 80 hotfixes. This first CU for SQL Server 2012 does not have many hotfixes.
It is not a really surprise for us, the frequency is the same as before. Normally, the next CU should come in 1 or 2 months (May-June).
The service pack mostly comes one year later…:-D
Conclusion
Don’t forget to test it before you update the production server!
