MariaDB 10.3.1x + 10.4.x : mysqld_multi not working properly

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, MariaDB | No Comments

A couple of days ago, we upgraded some MariaDB instances on a consolidated database server. However, after the software update we were not able to manage our instances anymore using mysqld_multi whatever the MariaDB release (10.3.18 or the latest 10.4.x). Previously, everything worked fine with 10.3.14. So, what happened to our system?

DOAG 2018 – Fazit: it’s not only about Oracle anymore

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | One Comment

Amazing conference, amazing people and awesome party like every year  and of course great networking like every year This year, I was quite impressed about the number of different technologies. Speeches were not only centered around the big red O. As already summarized, by my colleague Alain yesterday: DOAG 2018 – Not only database – Docker and Kubernetes rule the world Open Source RDBMS, containers and microservices are arising much more quickly than cloud computing…

Install Oracle instant client and perl DBD::Oracle @ Mac OS X Yosemite

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

Recently, I tried to install and connect to Oracle databases directly from my new Mac Book using perl  (Yes, perl is still one of the most friendly programming language for DBAs). What first seemed to be easy was in reality quite difficult and long. Alone, the huge quantity of  hits on the WorldWideWeb was impressive. However none of the hits were providing the entire solution. Follows, all the steps to prepare and install the Oracle…

Oracle Database 12c: The secret of moving datafiles online

By | Database management | No Comments

Some time ago, my colleague Michael Schwalm wrote about a new Oracle Database 12c feature for moving database files online. In this post, we will not describe the syntax of the command, but focus on Oracle internals. To do that, I have written a tiny test protocol composed of two parts: Session 1: starts a batch (schema BATCH) processing which runs for hours Session 2: that’s us, we are connected as SYS (of course we…

Data Pump in Oracle Database 12c: die wichtigsten Neuigkeiten

By | Database management | No Comments

In Oracle Database 12c…

Frankfurter Datenbanktage: Bei dbi services hat Ostern schon begonnen…

By | Database management | No Comments

By | Database management | No Comments

OOW Day 4: Dive in, Rock out – Oracle Party & Tomy Kyte’s 12 things on Oracle 12c

By | Technology Survey | No Comments

Well, this last day really was funny! We met some old friends (they will recognize themselves) and also Oracle guru Jonathan Lewis. We must confess Larry Ellison really has good friends. His America’s cup boat is really amazing (see picture below) as was last night’s party. Today, we were really tired 😉 and the speakers too. Most of today’s content was a review of what Pierre and I reported during the week. It fits exactly…

OOW Day 3: Oracle database 12c features review

By | Technology Survey | No Comments

Today, we had the opportunity to follow several sessions concerning the upcoming Oracle Database 12c release. Like Apple, Oracle keeps the secret over Oracle Database 12c, but tends to deviate from the Silicon Valley secret culture. However, we can relay all that we heard to you 😉 Over the past 10 years, Oracle has worked on plenty of state of the art topics like compression, in-memory operations, scalability, and this is still true for Oracle…

OOW Day 2: Oracle Linux developements & news

By | Technology Survey | No Comments

This second day at the Oracle Open World is hotter than the previous one! Today, we focused on Oracle Linux. Oracle Linux roadmap, the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) release 3 is coming in summer 2013. Oracle’s strategy consists of developing the new enterprise-class kernel on state of the art hardware, which guarantees to customer to get the most of their hardware (Like Suse for SLES 11). The Oracle Linux development team is working on many…
