Adding a dbvisit standby database on the ODA in a non-OMF environment

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Oracle | No Comments

I have recently been working on a customer project where I had been challenged adding a dbvisit standby database on an ODA X7-2M, named ODA03. The existing customer environment was composed of Oracle Standard 12.2 version database. The primary database, myDB, is running on server named srv02 and using a non-OMF configuration. On the ODA side we are working with OMF configuration. The dbvisit version available at that time was version 8. You need to…

Having multiple standby databases and cascading with dbvisit

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Oracle | No Comments

Dbvisit standy is a disaster recovery solution that you will be able to use with Oracle standard edition. I have been working on a customer project where I had to setup a system having one primary and two standby databases. One of the standby database had to run with a gap of 24 hours. Knowing that flashback possibilities are very limited on standard edition, this would give customer the ability to extract and restore some…

Connecting to ODA derby database

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Oracle | No Comments

ODA light (ODA X7-2S, X7-2M, X8-2S, X8-2M) come with an internal derby database to manage ODA metadata. From time to time, there is a need to check or update some information within it, as for example when facing database deletion issue. I would like to strongly advise that updating manually the ODA repository should only be done after getting Oracle support guidance and agreement to do so. Neither the author (that’s me 🙂 ) nor…

Migrating Oracle database from windows to ODA

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Oracle | 2 Comments

Nowadays I have been working on an interesting customer project where I had to migrate windows oracle standard databases to ODA. The ODAs are X7-2M Models, running version 18.5. This version is coming with Red Hat Enterprise Linx 6.10 (Santiago). Both windows databases and target ODA databases are running PSU 11.2.0.4.190115. But this would definitively also be working for oracle 12c and oracle 18c databases. The databases are licensed with Standard Edition, so migrating through…

Moving oracle database to new home on ODA

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Oracle | No Comments

Moving database to new ORACLE_HOME is a common dba task. Performing this task on an ODA will need an additional step knowing ODA Lite is using an internal Derby database for the metadata. ODA HA will not be a problem here, knowing we do not have any Derby database. Through this blog I would like to give you some guidance and work around to move database to a new home (of same major release). In…

How workload policies is making your life easy

By | Control-M | No Comments

Working as a control-M administrator, we are often requested to hold jobs or stop jobs during a period of time. Holding jobs and updating the job configuration might not be the most efficient way to do this. Workload policies is making your life really easier, giving you the possibility to configure such modification in advance and to let the system act independently whether the NDP (New Day Processing) is in the middle of the period…

RMAN catalog upgrade, why, when and how

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Oracle | 4 Comments

One of our customer has been initially creating a RMAN catalog on an Oracle database release 12.1.0.2.0 and was now intending to register new Oracle 12.2.0.1.0 databases. Registering the databases will be failing with errors : PL/SQL package RCAT.DBMS_RCVCAT version 12.01.00.02 in RCVCAT database is too old RMAN-06429: RCVCAT database is not compatible with this version of RMAN

ODA database been stuck in deleting status

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Oracle | One Comment

Facing an internal inconsistency in the ODA derby database is very painful (see https://blog.dbi-services.com/oda-lite-what-is-this-odacli-repository/ for more info about the derby database). I have recently faced a case where the database deletion was failing and the database remained then in “Deleting” status.  Connecting directly to the internal derby database and doing some self cleaning is very risky and should be performed at your own and known risk. So, in most of the case, a database inconsistency issue…

ODA, network interface and configure-firstnet

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Oracle | 15 Comments

Deploying new Bare Metal ODA X7-2S or 2M, I have been curious how configure-firstnet would interact with the fiber and copper ethernet network interfaces. Reading documentation on the web, I could not clearly understand if it is mandatory to have the ODA connected to the LAN when performing an ODA reimage and/or running the configure-firstnet in additionnal of having ILOM connection. After digging deeper and few tests, I wanted to share my experience in this…
