Schema only account with Oracle 18.3

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

With Oracle 18.3, we have the possibility to create schemas without a password. Effectively in a perfect world, we should not be able to connect to application schemas. For security reasons it is a good thing that nobody can connect directly to the application schema. A good way is to use proxy connections, in fact connect as app_user but using the psi_user password for example: Let’s create a user named app_user: SQL> connect sys@pdb as…

PDB Snapshot Carousel Oracle 18.3

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

A new feature with Oracle 18c is the PDB snapshot carousel. As indicated by its name a PDB snapshot is a copy of a PDB at a specific point in time. You have the possibility to create up to eight snapshots, when you reach the maximum number of snapshots, the last snapshot is over written. The snapshot carousel is obviously the name of all your PDB snapshots. We have the possibility to create automatic snapshots…

PDB lockdown with Oracle 18.3.0.0

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

The PDB lockdown feature offers you the possibility to restrict operations and functionality available from within a PDB, and might be very useful from a security perspective. Some new features have been added to the 18.3.0.0 Oracle version: You have the possibility to create PDB lockdown profiles in the application root like in the CDB root. This facilitates to have a more precise control access to the applications associated with the application container. You can…

RMAN PITR recover table Oracle 12c

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

At one client’s site, I had to restore a table someone had partially deleted one week before. Before Oracle 12c, we had to duplicate the target database to another server, and then to export and import data to the target database. But depending on the database size, it could cost a lot of time, and as nobody knew when the delete action happened, it was more practical to use the rman recover table command in…

Upgrade EM 13.2 to EM 13.3

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | 2 Comments

As the last Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 13.3 is out since a few days, I decided to test the upgrade procedure from the Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 13.2 You have to follow some pre-requisites: First you copy the emkey : oracle@localhost:/home/oracle/ [oms13c] emctl config emkey -copy_to_repos_from_file -repos_conndesc ‘”(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST= (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=em13c)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA= (SERVICE_NAME=EMREP13C)))”‘ -repos_user sysman -repos_pwd manager1 -emkey_file /home/oracle/oms13c/sysman/config/emkey.ora Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 13c Release 2 Copyright (c) 1996, 2016 Oracle Corporation. Licensable targets and Management Packs with EM13c

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

When you add a new target in Enterprise Manager 13c , the management packs are enabled by default. This could be a problem in case of a LMS control, and to avoid any problem, you have to  manually disable those management packs. If like me you recently have moved your database infrastructure to a new one and have to add one hundred targets, you will have to click some hundredth of times on the management…

PDB RMAN backups available after plugging in on a new CDB with Oracle 18c

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

With Oracle 18c, it is possible to use PDB rman backups created on the source CDB (they are called PREPLUGIN backups) when the PDB has been relocated to a target CDB. In my environment, my original CDB is DB18, with the PDB named pdborig. The target CDB is PSI18. The first step consist in running a rman backup on pdborig: oracle@localhost:/u00/app/oracle/ [DB18] rman target sys/manager@pdborig Recovery Manager: Release 18.0.0.0.0 – Production on Tue May 15…

Oracle 18c clone PDB and Transparent Data Encryption

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

Let’s do some tests with the Oracle 18c new feature in creating PDB clone with DBCA. Unfortunately, this feature does not work when you have TDE enabled. Just to remember, with Oracle 12.2 we had the possibility to create PDBs with dbca just from PDBseed to from unplugged PDBs: Now in version 18c we can create PDBs from existing PDBs as follows (for this test TDE is disabled): You can choose the Pluggable Database you want…

ORA-12547 TNS lost contact on SLES12 and oracle 11.2.0.x

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | No Comments

On a client’s site, I have migrated successfully Oracle 12c databases from RedHat to SLES12 without any problem. I encountered a problem doing the same work with Oracle 11.2.0.3 and oracle 11.2.0.4 on SLES 12. Once I have moved the database data files, redo logs, control files and spfile to the new server, when I try to startup the database, I receive the error message: oracle@server:/u00/app/oracle/diag/ [db1] sq SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.3.0 Production on Thu Feb…

DBVISIT from Oracle to Postgres

By | Database Administration & Monitoring | One Comment

As I regularly work on Oracle and PostgreSQL, I decided to test the replication from Oracle to PostgreSQL using the Dbvisit Replicate tool. Dbivisit Replicate does not use Oracle logminer ot triggers but its own mining processes to get the changes when they are written to the redo logs. When a change appears in the redo log, an external file called PLOG is generated and transferred to the target. The architecture is quite easy to…
