Creating archived redolog-files in group dba instead of oinstall

By | Database management, Oracle | No Comments

Since Oracle 11g files created by the database belong by default to the Linux group oinstall. Changing the default group after creating the central inventory is difficult. In this Blog I want to show how locally created archived redo can be in group dba instead of oinstall. One of my customers had the requirement to provide read-access on archived redo to an application for logmining. To ensure the application can access the archived redo, we…

Why ODA reimaging doesn’t work on the first try?

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Database management, Oracle | No Comments

Introduction Reimaging an ODA is a good practice for a lot of reasons. To make your ODA cleaner if it’s running for many years and if you patch regularly. To simplify patching because if you’re late you could have to apply multiple intermediate patches to reach the target version. Or simply because you need to change the configuration (for example network configuration) and you want to make things clean, and be sure that future patches…

How to migrate from on-premise to an Azure SQL Database

By | Cloud, Database management | No Comments

As a SQL Server DBA we have the habit to migrate databases from an instance to another one or to a new environment. But migrate a database from on-premise to the Azure Cloud is an operation that we don’t deal with every day. As a reminder, Azure SQL Database is a relational database-as-a-service (DBaaS) which gives the ability to manage your databases directly from the Cloud with the performance of your choose, reliability, security and…

Direct NFS, ODM 4.0 in 12.2: archiver stuck situation after a shutdown abort and restart

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Database management | 2 Comments

A customer had an interesting case recently. Since Oracle 12.2. he got archiver stuck situations after a shutdown abort and restart. I reproduced the issue and it is caused by direct NFS since running ODM 4.0 (i.e. since 12.2.). The issue also reproduced on 18.5. When direct NFS is enabled then the archiver-process writes to a file with a preceding dot in its name. E.g. .arch_1_90_985274359.arc When the file has been fully copied from the…

When you change the UNDO_RETENTION parameter, the LOB segment’s retention value is not modified

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Database management, Development & Performance, Hardware & Storage, Oracle | No Comments

Below, I will try to explain, a particular case for the general error : ORA-01555 snapshot too old error.. Normally, when we have this error, we are trying to adapt the retention parameters or to tune our queries. SQL> show parameter undo; NAME TYPE VALUE ———————————— ———– —————————— temp_undo_enabled boolean FALSE undo_management string AUTO undo_retention integer 3600 –extended from 900, undo_tablespace string UNDOTBS1 But, are some scenarios where the above rule is not working . We…

SQL Server Temporal Table – How to store a history table in another file?

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Database management, SQL Server | 2 Comments

Few days ago, a customer asks me if it is possible to move the history table to slower but cheaper storage. The question behind this is whether it is possible to create a history table on a separate filegroup and file. Few years ago, I write a serie of blogs about temporal table here. I will take the same example to try to set up a filegroup specific to a history table. In my sample,…

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Database management, Hardware & Storage, Oracle | 4 Comments

Even you don’t need 18c, or you’re not ready for this release, this patch will also update your 11gR2, 12cR1 and 12cR2 databases to the latest PSU available on ODA, it means for example the patchset from last July if you’re using 12cR1. Here is how to apply this latest patch for your ODA lite. In this example, the patch was applied on an X6-2S ODA running on previous release: 12.2.1.4.0. 1) Download the patch…

Create a primary database using the backup of a standby database on 12cR2

By | Database Administration & Monitoring, Database management, Oracle | One Comment

The scope of this blog will be to show how to create a primary role database based on a backup of a standby database on 12cR2. Step1: We are assuming that an auxiliary instance has been created and started in nomount mode. rman target / restore primary controlfile from ‘backup_location_directory/control_.bkp’; exit; By specifying “restore primary” , will modify the flag into the controlfile, and will mount a primary role instance instead of a standby one….
